Question by Sophra: What’s the best “house” for a beginning investor?
I’m a graduate student just starting to at my investment options and educating myself about mutual funds, index funds, and all that jazz. However, I’m getting lost with all of these different online brokerage firms and want to hear where people are putting their money and what they recommend for a newbie like me. I was going to go with TD Ameritrade but keep hearing about Vanguard and others.
Like I said, I’m a student and I’m also getting married next year, so I’m looking for something/place where part of my money can get me relatively quick return and the rest can just “cook” and grow.

Answer by brian-the-brain TD Ameritrade is good. I use them and they perform well and have low commissions. If you are just going to let the money cook you will probably not need to worry much about commissions though and so you might want to go somewhere that has an advisor to give you advice. You will obviously want to meet with the person to make sure you get along. You can learn and ask questions for free.
An advisor is going to try and sell you things too, so just make sure you are only buying what you want. They will have your interests in mind and then sell you their product. For example they will get you into some life insurance that works for you and you might open up mutual fund account and so on. A place like Ameriprise is what I am talking about.
One last bit of advice, if you truly want to learn open an account at TD ameritrade and use all the tools and software they have available. Or find another place that has tools you want to use. Then manage a small amount of your money yourself. Something like 10%. Once you prove to yourself that you are doing a better job than the other guys you invest most of your money with then increase it.
